The one-room thatched roof cottage, Maria’s home in Cherkassy where she lived with her mother and father, Anastasia and Trofin, and her five brothers and four sisters. It was this home to which Maria returned in 1973, after making first contact with her family since her departure to the prison camp in the Spring of 1942.

MARIA DOWGAI (NEE YURCHENKO) From War’s end in 1945, Maria, her husband Jack and young daughter Vera, travelled as “displaced persons’ through a series of Camps in Germany and Europe. On 5th August, 1948 Jack was sent to Australia by officials. Maria and Vera left Naples on 17th March 1949 and arrived in Melbourne on 13 April 1949.Details
