The one-room thatched roof cottage, Maria’s home in Cherkassy where she lived with her mother and father, Anastasia and Trofin, and her five brothers and four sisters. It was this home to which Maria returned in 1973, after making first contact with her family since her departure to the prison camp in the Spring of 1942.

Jack, Vera and Maria
From the end of World War II in 1945, many displaced persons (declared stateless) spent long periods in Camps. On the 5th August 1948, men departed from Hanover to board ship at Vollen Bosfal, leaving wives and children to follow. At that time Australia was not accepting families with more than one child. Jack, Vera and Maria – centre front, say a sad farewell.
