Maria on her visit home to the village of Topelni in cherkassy to meet parents Trofin and Anastasia Yurchenko in 1973. She had not seen them since being taken by the Germans in Spring of 1942, aged 16 (a time away from home of 31 years).

From the end of World War II in 1945, many displaced persons (declared stateless) spent long periods in Camps. On the 5th August 1948, men departed from Hanover to board ship at Vollen Bosfal, leaving wives and children to follow. At that time Australia was not accepting families with more than one child.
